The physicians and staff of Advanced Dermatology offer a full range of medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology services, with special emphasis on prevention, screening, and treatment of skin cancer.

“Skin cancer screening or mole exams account for the majority of our office visits,” says Chris Englert, N.P., owner of Advanced Dermatology. “Melanoma rates have increased dramatically over the past twenty years. We are finding one to two melanomas per week but finding them in early stages, so they are very treatable. Often, the skin cancer we find was not the reason for the appointment.”

Advanced Dermatology offers the most innovative and effective treatment for skin cancer, Mohs Micrographic Surgery. Dr. Jennifer Z. Cooper is fellowship trained in the Mohs technique. “Mohs is indicated for more complex skin cancer, more challenging locations such as the face, larger cancers on the body, and cases where the cancer is ill defined,” Dr. Cooper says. “It’s an advanced technique that gives the highest cure rate for basal and squamous cell cancers.”

While Drs. Cooper and Englert...address all issues relating to hair, skin and nails...the major emphasis of the practice is prevention and treatment of skin cancer.

Mohs surgery is an in-office procedure done under local anesthesia. A frozen section of the skin cancer is assessed under a microscope while the patient is still in the office. The surgeon is able to start with a very narrow margin around the tumor in real time, as opposed to standard excision where the tissue is sent out to a lab.

“The Mohs procedure traces skin cancer down to its roots, allowing the most exact removal of the tumor while sparing the normal tissue surrounding it,” Dr. Cooper adds.

Dr. Cooper and her colleague in the practice, Dr. Deborah Englert, are both certified by the American Board of Dermatology. Dr. Englert has developed expertise in medical, surgical, cosmetic and laser dermatology with a specialty in the treatment of psoriasis. Dr. Cooper’s expertise is in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.

Drs. Englert and Cooper see patients at two locations in Hunt Valley and Bel Air. “Ours is definitely a family practice,” Dr. Cooper says. “Often we will see a patient and she will be so pleased with her experience that she will send her friends and family for all of their skin care needs. That is one of the things I enjoy most about practicing dermatology—I treat the whole spectrum of life.”

While Drs. Cooper and Englert and their staff of 40 skin care professionals address all issues relating to hair, skin and nails and offer a full line of cosmetics and skin treatments, the major emphasis of the practice is prevention and treatment of skin cancer.

“If you have a blistering burn, you are at elevated risk for melanoma in your lifetime,” Dr. Cooper says. “Tanning long-term is also a factor.”

Dr. Cooper advises, “Wear a moisturizer with sun block every day, even in winter. Don’t ignore any new or changing skin lesions or any wound that does not heal. The sooner you come to see us, the better the outcome. With eight providers we can provide emergency and urgent care appointments.”
