Endodontics

Endodontic treatment, also known as root canal therapy, is a specialized procedure for saving broken down teeth and resolving toothaches. The bad rap has faded as new techniques, materials and anesthesia have made root canal therapy a relatively painless procedure.

With more than 60 years of collective experience, Dr. Louis H. Berman, Dr. James O. Roahen and Dr. Kenneth R. Hunter will celebrate Annapolis Endodontics’ 28th anniversary this year. “We believe it’s important to emphasize our longevity, consistency and experience,” says Dr. Berman, founder of the practice. “We have a strong knowledge base that is further enhanced by our involvement in dental education.”

Dr. Berman lectures nationally on all phases of endodontics. With his publications being translated into more than 16 languages, he is revered as one of the leading textbook editors and authors in the field. Dr. Berman received his Bachelor’s degree in biology from University of Maryland Baltimore County, his dental degree from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and his certification in endodontics from The Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Dr. Roahen joined Annapolis Endodontics in 1993 after retiring from the Navy as a Captain. He received his undergraduate degree from Lawrence University and served in the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. Dr. Roahen then received his dental degree from the University of Michigan. He earned both his specialty certification in Endodontics and a Master’s degree from the University of Oregon. Before going into private practice, Dr. Roahen also served as Professor and Chairman of the Endodontic Graduate Program at the Naval Dental School in Bethesda.

Dr. Hunter received his Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from the University of Florida. After serving in the Navy as a flight officer, he obtained his dental degree at the Virginia Commonwealth School of Dentistry. Returning to the Navy, Dr. Hunter completed a general practice residency at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, California, and his specialty certification at the Naval Dental School in Bethesda.

Annapolis Endodontics is committed to providing the best endodontic treatment, using the latest advancements in the field. These include digital x-rays that give clear images with radiation decreased by close to 80 percent over traditional x-rays, advanced materials for cleaning and filling the insides of roots, surgical operating microscopes and novel methods of administering anesthesia that help to reduce discomfort, making procedures virtually painless.

“Endodontic procedures have become very refined in order to optimize outcomes and maximize patient comfort,” Dr. Berman says. “There are many cases that should not have endodontic treatment—badly broken down teeth, root-fractured teeth, or teeth that are surrounded by advanced gum disease. Without proper assessment, endodontic treatment could wrongly be done on a tooth that has a poor long-term prognosis and should be removed. This is why it’s important to see an experienced clinician. The predictability of success is really what determines the course of treatment and every case is different.”
