Periodontics

Literally meaning “around the tooth,” periodontics is one of the eight specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. Periodontists Deborah Odell, D.D.S., Angela Miele, D.M.D., and Cary Bly, D.D.S. are dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that impact the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. Left untreated, periodontal disease destroys the attachment fibers and supporting bone that hold teeth in place, which can lead to tooth loss and even systemic ailments such as diabetes and heart disease.

“Healthy gums are essential for good dental health, and good heath overall,” explains Dr. Odell, who founded Annapolis Periodontics in 1993. “We work to help our patients establish positive dental hygiene habits, and we reinforce those habits during every visit,” adds Dr. Miele, who joined the practice in 2001.

At Annapolis Periodontics, the doctors and staff take the time to ensure that patients understand their diagnosis, the cause of their condition and the recommended treatment, which could involve adjusting a bite or gum line, providing pre-work for orthodontics or replacing a tooth with dental implants.

Dr. Odell received her undergraduate degree and completed her dental training at Case Western Reserve University. Her residency in periodontics was spent at the University of Maryland. In a recent survey of her peers, Dr. Odell was voted the “Best Periodontist in Annapolis.”

After graduating from New York University, Dr. Miele earned her dental degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Like Dr. Odell, she completed her residency in periodontics at the University of Maryland.

Both doctors are members of the Maryland State Dental Association and participate with other specialists in the Chesapeake Implant Study Club and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI). In addition, both have trained at the prestigious Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education and participate in regular continuing education courses by top educators in their field.

Annapolis Periodontics expanded its office and services in 2008 with the arrival of Dr. Bly. A Kent Island native, Dr. Bly earned her undergraduate degree at Franklin & Marshall College. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland Dental School and completed her periodontal residency at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Along with the office expansion, the practice recently invested in a CT scan for three-dimensional imaging. “X-rays are traditionally two-dimensional,” notes Dr. Miele. “But now, within seconds, we can get a three-dimensional view of the jaw that allows us to do guided surgery for implant placement without opening the gums, which greatly reduces a patient’s postsurgical discomfort.” Furthermore, they have incorporated the use of a Periolase laser for the treatment of periodontal disease. The “LANAP” or Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure” is the first FDA approved laser known to regenerate new bone and attachment around teeth. Laser technology is a major advancement in treating periodontal disease with minimal recovery time.

While all three doctors enjoy the artistry involved in creating beautiful smiles through periodontics, they also value building and maintaining lasting relationships with their patients. Dr. Miele says, “Earning the trust of our patients is the most rewarding part of what we do.”
