Doctor Burkett initially pursued an art degree, prior to entering the field of dentistry to earn her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene from the University of Maryland. After working briefly at that profession in Washington, DC, she returned to the University where she and her husband, John D. Burkett, became Doctors of Dental Surgery in 1989. During dental school Brenda received a pathology award and was published in the Journal of Periodontology. She also had exhibited special skills in prosthodontics, where her passions for science and art blended seamlessly together. With encouragement from the department chairman, she entered and completed in 1991 a post-graduate program in prosthodontics at the University of Maryland.

In 1992, the doctors Burkett chose to combine their professional abilities and skills as Burkett and Burkett, D.D.S., P.A., a Salisbury practice structured to provide patients with convenient continuity in state-of-the-art dental care of outstanding quality. Its beautiful contemporary building, constructed in 1999, was designed to efficiently sustain requirements for electronic medical recordkeeping with built-in confidentiality safeguards, and sophisticated clinical equipment needed to perform the most advanced dental procedures. It also very comfortably accommodates an expanded patient base and staff.
