Keeping up with the latest advances in computer technology, monitoring servers and managing networks are enough to overwhelm the owners of most small- to medium-sized businesses. . . and an internal information technology (IT) department is a luxury few companies in that category can afford. As the world’s dependency on technology increases, so does the need for companies like Corsica Technologies, providers of IT management and support to businesses and individuals—as much or as little as they need—at a reasonable price.

“Think of us as your outsourced IT department,” says Dale Walls, founding partner of Corsica Technologies. “Most of our clients are small- to mediumsized businesses that hire us on a contractual basis to manage their networks and monitor the performance of their systems. We have other clients who use our services on an as-needed basis and we also operate a walk-in computer repair center at our office in Centreville.”

Mr. Walls and colleague Duane Wagner worked as IT managers while enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during the late 1990s. Upon discharge in 2002, Mr. Wagner returned home to Indiana. Mr. Walls returned to his hometown of Centreville, Maryland and in 2003 invited Mr. Wagner to join him here as a partner in the business. Today, Corsica Technologies is 35 employees strong and growing!

In addition to the Centreville location, Corsica Technologies operates an office in New York City where principals Larry Frydman (CFO) and Andrew Broderick (Business Development Manager) reside after a 2010 transition of their firm, formerly Computer Professionals USA Inc., under the Corsica Technologies corporate umbrella.

In order to receive direct support from hardware and software vendors, Corsica Technologies maintains business partnerships with Microsoft, Cisco, HP and others. “It is important to keep our training and vendor certifications up to date,” Mr. Walls says.

Individuals typically call Corsica Technologies for virus removal, to set up a wireless network in their home or to transfer files from an old computer to a new one. A typical business client is a small office with three to 25 PCs and an internal server. They use Corsica to manage the network and make sure everything is running. Mr. Walls describes this 24/7 system monitoring service as, “…the IT equivalent of your home security system. If your network goes down in the middle of the night, we will be alerted and will contact your local Internet service provider (ISP) immediately and get them proactively working on the problem, rather than wait until the start of the next business day. This service is for any business—accounting, real estate, insurance, construction—that depends on their network to be up and running every morning.”

Mr. Walls attributes his company’s success to the principle of keeping integrity in everything they do. “We are not waiting for a client’s drive to fail or their system to get a virus,” he says. “We would rather have them pay us not to have problems than pay us to fix problems. Our team is genuinely interested in making sure every user is well supported.”
