That important interview, once-in-a-lifetime occasion, special date or just everyday life: a striking hairstyle is critical to a polished appearance. From elegant and sophisticated to sassy and smart, stylists at Debbie’s Mane Concern, LLC create captivating coiffures.
Owned and managed by Debbie Huster, Debbie’s Mane Concern (DMC) is an extension of her lifelong passion for making people look and feel great. What started as a fascination with hair when she was 6 years old turned into a career goal by the time she was 11 and working as a shampoo girl in a local salon. Majoring in cosmetology in high school, Debbie graduated with her Cosmetology license at 17.
A few years later, Debbie entertained the idea of opening her own salon. When a small rancher on a main thoroughfare called out as the perfect location, she signed the lease and launched the business. That was April of 1981 and almost three decades later, thanks to her can-do personality, DMC is thriving.
Expanding in 1988 to its current location, the full-service salon offers everything from haircuts, styles and nail services to facials and massages. DMC also offers lash and brow tinting, eyelash extensions and every phase of hair color from subtle or trendy to outrageous. Furthermore, Debbie is a specialist at hair-color correction.
The associates at DMC stay on the cutting edge of new procedures and products through continued education. Debbie has taught a Cosmetology continued education class at Harford Community College, which she said was as challenging as it was fun.
Open 6 days a week, DMC opens especially early at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Debbie caters to early birds so it’s not unusual for her to finish working her magic on several clients by 7:30. “I was a farmer’s daughter and we were always up early,” she says.
With 12 stations including a kiddy-car youth station, DMC accommodates women, men and children. The salon also has plenty of space and staff to handle weddings and special-occasion events, including glamour birthday parties for pre-teens.
A member of the National Cosmetologist Association since 1980, Debbie served on the Harford County Hairdressers Association for 12 years. Through salon fundraisers, DMC makes ongoing contributions to the community including donations to the March of Dimes for 25 years and City of Hope National Medical Center, as well as local individuals in need of kidney transplants, among others.
Debbie attributes her salon’s success to her clientele and the camaraderie of her staff, most of whom have been with her for more than 20 years. “We have clients who have been coming here for 25 years,” she says, “and we’ve developed wonderful relationships with the guests in our salon. We are actually serving several families’ fifth generation.”
Many guests compare Debbie and her associates to the characters from Steel Magnolias. “It’s a place to come and share your happy times, your sadness, your recipes,” says Debbie. “I feel my legacy is the friendships made because of the salon – not just the staff, but with the clients and them with each other.”
