Lawyers

Ewing, Dietz, Fountain and KehoeLocated in an 18th century building in the heart of Easton, Ewing, Dietz, Fountain & Kehoe, P.A., which was founded in 1954 by the late L. Clark Ewing, has nine attorneys who work within the areas of law that are most important to the residents, businesses, local governments and community organizations of the Mid-Shore.

Ewing, Dietz provides valuable legal services and thoughtful counsel by focusing its practice on estate planning, estate and trust administration, business planning and transactions, real estate transactions and disputes, zoning and land use, family law matters, civil litigation, criminal defense and local government law.

“We have a tradition of helping our clients identify realistic expectations and providing cost-effective ways to meet their goals,” says partner Karen Kaludis.

“We have a tradition of helping our clients identify realistic expectations and providing cost-effective ways to meet their goals.”

Today, the practice has seven partners. Philip Dietz, a business lawyer, came to the firm in the 1970s. W. Thomas Fountain, a Talbot County native who joined the practice in 2002, has decades of experience in estate planning and administration. John Hall works extensively on trust and estate matters. Karen Kaludis has a trial practice focusing on family law; she also serves as a certified mediator. Stephen Kehoe is a trial attorney and local government lawyer. Sharon Van Emburgh, who received her law degree from the University of Richmond and an engineering degree from Bucknell University, has developed an extensive civil practice in estates and land use. Ms. Van Emburgh also serves as Easton’s Town Attorney. Alexis “Lex” Kramer, another Talbot County native and a retired U.S. Navy Commander, is an experienced trial attorney who holds degrees from Loyola College, Georgetown University and the University of Maryland School of Law.

Christopher B. Kehoe, a former partner of the firm, was appointed to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals by Gov. Martin O’Malley and took office on January 21, 2009.

Recent additions to Ewing, Dietz include associates Christopher Jennings and Patrick Fitzgerald. Mr. Jennings, a trial attorney with more than a decade of experience in the state and federal courts of Maryland and Louisiana, is a graduate of Indiana University-Bloomington and Loyola University of New Orleans College of Law. Mr. Fitzgerald, a lifelong Eastonian and graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Baltimore School of Law, has practical knowledge of his hometown and Maryland’s Eastern Shore, which gives him invaluable insight into the legal issues facing local clients.

A significant benefit of the firm for both its attorneys and clients is the practice’s collegial atmosphere. “We’re friends. We regularly bounce ideas off one another,” explains Ms. Van Emburgh. “Our approach helps us structure the best solutions for our clients.”

Giving back to the community is important to Ewing, Dietz, Fountain & Kehoe. When not working on behalf of clients, the firm’s lawyers volunteer both time and talent to local organizations, including The Memorial Hospital at Easton, the YMCA of Talbot County, the Easton Day Care Center, Inc. trading as Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers, Mid-Shore Mental Health Systems, the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, For All Seasons, the Maryland Historical Trust, the Historical Society of Talbot County and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.
