The doctors and staff at Hoffman Animal Hospital in Annapolis know pets are family members too. "We pride ourselves on educating pet owners on what is best for their furry kids," says owner and founder Dr. Lisa Hoffman, D.V.M. "We have pet-loving staff and doctors who treat each patient as if it were their own."

The staff participates in monthly in-house continuing education and frequent outside training. The office is kept up-to-date as well. "We are constantly adding new equipment such as digital x-rays and ultrasound," Dr. Hoffman says. The office provides boarding services for patients only, which means the facility is small and they know each of the pets staying there.

Dr. Hoffman received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989 and founded her original practice in 1992. Dr. Hoffman and Dr. Nicole Deegan work there full time while Dr. Liesl Wheeler works Mondays and every other Saturday. Dr. Deegan received her D.V.M. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and Dr. Wheeler earned hers from Ohio State. The practice's support staff has grown from four to 16 members since 1992.

"Being a veterinarian is a great job because you are able to help both people and their pets simultaneously," Dr. Deegan says. "I enjoy working at Hoffman because of the wonderful clientele who care so much about their pets, and because all of my co-workers are compassionate and dedicated to the profession."

Dr. Wheeler says, "The committed staff and doctors along with the kind and dedicated pet owners make Hoffman Animal Hospital a truly wonderful place to work. After working at Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic for years and having the opportunity to meet many of Hoffman Animal Hospital's clients and speak to Dr. Hoffman on a regular basis regarding her patients' care, I knew this was the place for me."

The friendly professionalism begins as soon as the client walks in the door, and no pet owner leaves without receiving thorough after-care and preventative instructions. "A patient's best care is our highest priority," says Dr. Hoffman. "We stress client education so owners can make good decisions for their pets."

Hoffman Animal Hospital supports neighborhood elementary school fundraisers, community festivals, and the Anne Arundel SPCA, which provides care and adoption services for homeless animals in central Maryland. The staff also operates a Foundling Fund where they take in animals whose owners can no longer care for them, get them back in tip-top shape and place them in new homes. The fund is partially funded by donations but mostly by the hospital.

Dr. Hoffman says she prizes the long-term relationships she has formed with families who bring their pets to her practice. She enjoys watching children grow up and become a new generation of pet owners, the feeling of accomplishment when she helps an animal to heal from illness or injury, and when she and her staff help an owner find solutions to training and behavioral problems, allowing the pet to become a better member of the family.
