Kuhn’s Jewelers has been an ongoing business since 1853. That constancy alone speaks to the overwhelming satisfaction of customers with the quality of its products and services. Long regarded as Salisbury’s finest jewelry retailer, Kuhn’s continues to gain acceptance as one of the most reputable jewelers on Maryland’s entire Eastern Shore.
Because of its reputation and long-term relationships with vendors, Kuhn’s procures its merchandise at unusually low prices. Consequently, customers discover great values in quality jewelry and other fine wares when they visit the store. Owner Susan Purnell especially wants shoppers to realize that they’ll encounter a wide price-range of fine products. She clarifies, “We carry everything from sterling silver charms to that perfect diamond engagement ring or a spectacular Rolex watch”
Ms. Purnell is a member of Jewelers of America and a graduate of the prestigious Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Her company is the exclusive area dealer for a number of highly acclaimed jewelry lines, such as Tacori, Simon G, Verragio and Hidalgo. In fact, Kuhn’s impressive inventory includes over 5,000 hand-selected pieces acquired from distinctive sources around the world.
For customers seeking something truly unique, Kuhn’s proudly presents the creative skills of GIA-certified staff member, Kyle Bounds, who spent five years designing jewelry in New York. He can restore a treasured family heirloom, or create an extraordinary piece worthy of becoming one. Furthermore, Kuhn’s has an estate case filled with spectacular vintage pieces.
Ms. Purnell and her staff emphasize consumer education for all customers but are particularly diligent about helping shoppers with the happy, but often intimidating, process of finding those perfect engagement rings and wedding bands. Kuhn’s explains how diamonds are valued and helps them customize stunning pieces which fulfill their aesthetic expectations and provide the greatest value for their money. After selecting the most appealing stone which fits their budget, they choose a mounting to enhance it, as well as the hand it will adorn. The store carries an extensive inventory of beautiful diamonds and exquisite mountings in all the precious metals to assist them with individualizing their purchase.
Seemingly, Ms. Purnell is as enthusiastic about her community as about her business. She is a dedicated board member and advisor to Community Foundation, Urban Salisbury and Girl Scouts of Chesapeake Bay, and for five years, has played a major role in organizing the annual Jack Purnell-Chris Thomas Memorial Tennis Tournament, a fundraiser for Coastal Hospice. The two late men, which it honors by using their names, were avid tennis players and benefited from hospice care.
The late Jack Purnell was Susan’s dad and the previous owner of Kuhn’s Jewelers. The store has been in her family for three generations and she remarks pensively, “We are very discriminating about what goes into a Kuhn’s gift box. It has become symbolic of our tradition of excellence and must carry only superb quality to the recipient.”
