The need for specialized accounting services, particularly in a financially challenging business climate, are often understated. In addition to providing traditional CPA firm services such as financial statements and tax returns, the accounting firm of Lombardo, Wagner, Stitcher & Company, LLC (LWSCO), specializes in advising new and established businesses in forming effective and efficient business structures and navigating complex commercial transactions.

“LWSCO is staffed with a dynamic group of certified public accountants and other professionals providing key solutions to our clients’ unique needs,” says Matthew C. Wagner, CPA, CVA. “We serve clients in a broad range of industries, including but not limited to government contractors, hotels, restaurants, physicians, lawyers, real estate developers and investors, plumbers, and nonprofits.”

Should a business be set up as a corporation, a partnership, or a sole proprietorship? What are the upsides and downsides of each structure? How can the cost of doing business be lowered? These kinds of questions require expert knowledge of tax laws and accounting principles. “LWSCO is a 28-person firm, which in itself sets us apart,” Brian Stitcher, CPA, MBA explains. “There are not many accounting firms in the area with more than 20 people. The range of our combined expertise distinguishes us even further. Of the 28 people, 17 are CPAs and four are CPA candidates. One CPA is also a lawyer and three CPAs are also certified valuation analysts. Finally, six of our CPAs also hold MBA degrees. It’s a highly educated and credentialed group of folks.”

Clients of LWSCO include individuals who need personal tax returns prepared as well as businesses that need the whole package: financial statement audits, tax returns, business planning and consulting services. “You would think tax issues would bring us the most work,” Mr. Wagner says, “but actually, most clients come to us to consult on how to grow and expand their business. A large part of what we do involves helping people with the buying and selling of businesses as well as investing in their own company.”

The majority of LWSCO’s clients are local but the firm does provide services to clients around the country. In many cases, a client started out here and either moved away or was acquired by another business and retained LWSCO. “It’s not uncommon in litigation support cases that the ‘other side’ will be so impressed with our work that they will hire us,” says Andrew R. Lombardo, CPA, CVA.

LWSCO was formed in January 2010 by the merger of two firms. One firm had been established in 1972 and the other in 1990. “The merger enhanced our ability to provide optimal services to the clients of both firms and to the many new clients who typically find us by referral,” Mr. Stitcher says.

While the country is currently experiencing a recession, the demand for accounting services has increased rather than declined. Mr. Wagner explains, “The business owners who understand what we provide know that when their company is in trouble, they need us more than ever to help with the challenges of their changing industry.”
