Orthodontics

Mairead M. O’Reilly, D.D.S., M.S., PAA generation ago, if you had braces on your teeth, you were likely a teenager and, short of never smiling, there was no way to hide your temporarily metallic smile.

These days, orthodontist Mairead O'Reilly's patients range in age from grade school students to retired adults – and there's a good chance that the braces they wear are invisible to view, even when they're smiling.

"There have been so many advances in orthodontics that, for many patients, traditional, metal braces need never be used," says Dr. O'Reilly, who has three decades of dental and orthodontic experience, more than 20 years of which have been in her thriving Annapolis practice.

“My staff and I want every patient to feel, and know, that we're giving them the utmost in specialty orthodontic care.”

"There's no one-size-fits-all to orthodontics anymore," she adds, noting that having braces today can mean anything from traditional metal brackets to temporary anchorage devices (commonly known as TADs), to seemingly invisible appliances such as Invisalign and the new Incognito system of "hidden braces" that sit on the inside surface of the teeth rather than on the outside.

Dr. O'Reilly is the only orthodontist in the Annapolis area certified in the Incognito system, and she has been consistently named as the area's "Best Orthodontist" by What’s Up? Annapolis, The Capital Gazette’s Readers Choice Award and Baltimore magazine. She considers the votes of confidence as both an honor and responsibility.

"My staff and I want every patient to feel, and know, that we’re giving them the utmost in specialty orthodontic care,” says Dr. O'Reilly. "Orthodontics today is as much about providing people with a healthy, lasting, fully functional bite as it is about creating an aesthetically attractive smile."

Dr. O’Reilly received her dental training from Trinity College, University of Dublin, in her native Ireland, after which she joined The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Hospital in London, where she specialized in treating children with craniofacial anomalies. (She still provides such care today.) Dr. O'Reilly was certified in orthodontics at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, New York, and received a master of science degree from the University of Rochester’s Graduate School of Medicine and Dentistry. She is also a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and past president of the Anne Arundel County Dental Society.

To provide her patients with the latest in orthodontic care, Dr. O'Reilly is a lifelong student. She participates in continuing education programs at the nation’s most prestigious dental training centers and makes sure that her practice uses state-of-the-art dental and orthodontic technology. “We live in a digital world and our practice reflects that," Dr. O’Reilly explains. "For instance, with digital radiography and 3D imaging, images can now be emailed from our office to a patient’s dentist, which enables us to have an immediate consultation and coordinate our care in the most timely way possible."

While advanced training, techniques and technology enable her work, Dr. O'Reilly puts great value in the partnership she and her staff have with their patients: “When our work together is done, their beautiful smile and healthy bite are our shared achievements.”
