Private Club

Like the spectacular landscape upon which it rests, Maryland Golf & Country Clubs has grown slowly to elegant maturity and holds its own amongst the breathtaking beauty of its natural surroundings. This prime Harford County property was originally owned by Baseball Hall of Famer Lieutenant Colonel Leland “Larry” MacPhail, Jr. After retiring, he raised horses there and was president of the National Association of Thoroughbreds.

Colonel MacPhail also was an innovative visionary. Instead of thoroughbreds roaming his 219 acres of bluegrass turf, rolling hills and sparkling streams, he pictured golfers on a challenging private course of championship quality. In 1961, his dream quickly materialized as bluegrass turf was beautifully transformed into the ideal fairways of the first nine holes. Within several months the eighteen-hole championship golf course was complete and Colonel MacPhail sold it to some Harford County citizens, retaining only a club membership for himself.

Still today, avid golfers at every level consider this private country club’s par-73 course to be one of the area’s most beautiful and challenging. More than 50 bunkers, numerous water hazards and varying elevations are encountered amongst its mature trees and throughout its rolling terrain. Club members also appreciate its practice facility and pro shop, as well as the individual and group instructions, clinics and tournaments offered for men, women and juniors by PGA professionals. Each year, the club hosts numerous golf outings and other events for a number of local charitable organizations.

Maryland Golf & Country Clubs has evolved from its auspicious beginnings fifty years ago to a prestigious, family-oriented private club that offers members and their guests an elegant, 40,000 square-foot clubhouse with fabulous views and countless amenities. The club has been structured with several membership categories to accommodate the wide range of lifestyles and interests indigenous to Harford County residents and offers an impressive cluster of sports activities for children as well as adults.

Tennis enthusiasts are delighted with the club’s eight screened and lighted courts and with the quality of the private and group instruction offered by its tennis pros. For those seeking to have fun with family or friends, there’s no better place than Maryland Golf & Country Clubs’ incredible aquatic center. Its beautiful u-shaped pool with its generous diving area has a removable net for volleyball and a choice of sunny or shady places to relax.

From the club’s inviting array of facilities, members, as well as non-members, can select the perfect venue for their social or business gatherings.
