Eye Care

For many years, residents of the Eastern Shore have trusted Midshore Surgical Eye Center to protect and restore their eyesight. The Center offers comprehensive care, including routine exams, vision correction, diabetic and macular degeneration eye care, glaucoma treatment and surgical procedures using state-of-the-art technology.

Midshore Surgical Eye Center was founded in 1988 by James P. Thompson, M.D., a pioneer in vision-related healthcare who practiced ophthalmology in Easton for more than 35 years. Upon retiring in 2007, Dr. Thompson placed his confidence in his junior partners—Leslie Emmert-Buck, M.D., Ph.D., and Derrick Shindler, M.D.—to continue his tradition of providing the highest quality eye care.

As Dr. Thompson stated in a letter published in The Star Democrat, “My assessment of the two partners is equal. In both you will find integrity, intelligence and a true concern for your care and outcomes. I leave you in good hands.”

Dr. Emmert-Buck is a board-certified ophthalmologist and cornea specialist. She joined Midshore in 2004, after completing a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Emmert-Buck received her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and subsequently completed her ophthalmology residency training at the same institution. In addition, Dr. Emmert- Buck performed laboratory research at the National Institutes of Health for her dissertation, which earned her a Ph.D. in 1999.

At Midshore, Dr. Emmert-Buck performs cataract and other surgeries. She utilizes the VISX STAR S4 Excimer Laser and WaveScan Wavefront Systems, which are the most advanced technological platforms for cornea vision correction surgery. Dr. Emmert-Buck is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She is also an active member of the Easton Lions Club.

Dr. Shindler, a board-certified ophthalmologist, joined Midshore in 2005 after completing an ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. He received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Dartmouth College and his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. Dr. Shindler is a skilled ophthalmologic surgeon who specializes in cataract and eyelid surgery. Relying on both his engineering background and medical training, he employs the most advanced instrumentation and technology in his practice. Dr. Shindler is a member of the American Medical Association and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

In addition to the two ophthalmologists, patients at Midshore are served by a devoted staff whose common goal is to provide a professional, caring experience for all patients. Midshore Surgical Eye Center has two convenient locations, in Easton and Cambridge. A fully-equipped surgical suite at the Easton office enables Midshore to provide a continuum of care—from the pre-operative assessment and surgery through the post-operative recovery period.
