After more than 21 years in business, the practice of Dr. Nilda Collins and her staff is the most polished it's ever been. This year the pediatric dentists relocated to a brand new medical building one block away from their old place. They've decorated their new office, which has double the space, with a water theme to celebrate Annapolis, the city they serve.

"Our new office is very colorful and appeals to all ages. It's fun, bright and comfortable," Dr. Collins says. "The extra space allows us to better serve our patients, who are from Annapolis and the surrounding areas, from the ages of infancy to 21."

Pediatric dentistry is a distinct specialty recognized by the American Dental Association. It requires the completion of a two- or three-year program at a university or hospital after earning a D.M.D. or D.D.S. from dental school. Dr. Collins and Associates consistently appears in the “Top Dentists” lists of Baltimore, Washingtonian and What’s Up Annapolis magazines.

Dr. Collins earned her Doctorate of Dental Medicine and Master of Dental Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, which is the field’s highest level of accomplishment.

Although the practice is in a new location with increased parking, rooms and space, the office philosophy has not changed. Dr. Collins says, "We seek long-term relationships and we want healthy and happy children, not just one or the other. Children come as infants and they stay until age 21.”

"Since we are a group practice consisting entirely of pediatric dentistry specialists, we can offer a lot of flexibility to our patients and we can treat emergencies in a timely manner," Dr. Collins says. "We can treat patients who need more extensive treatment. We strongly believe in a comprehensive diagnosis, comprehensive treatment plan and continuity of care."

Dr. Collins is proud of her practice's ability to offer this continuity, a consistently emphasized trait. "We are very similar in our approach to treatment and we’re all specialists. We offer all ranges of treatment from minimal needs, referred to as 'tell, show and do,' all the way to procedures requiring nitrous oxide and oral sedation. We also have privileges at Anne Arundel Medical Center for general anesthesia."

The practice prioritizes prevention over the need for advanced technology, but they always strive toward the most modern care possible. Their new office is outfitted with an upgraded computer system that allows the dentists to view digital x-rays from anywhere in the office. They have always been high-tech, Dr. Collins says, but doubling their office space has enabled their full technological potential.

The focus on prevention pays off. "When patients leave our care at age 21, most will end up gumdisease- free with all their teeth sealed and straight," Dr. Collins says proudly. "They will be well-adjusted adults who are not scared of going to the dentist and will continue the preventive care they learned here."
