Harford County’s first female dentist, Dr. Peggy A. Leary, is still practicing locally more than 30 years later. Several of her patients and members of her experienced and dedicated staff have been with her for a large portion of that time.

Dr. Leary started practicing in Bel Air in 1979 and opened her current office, also in Bel Air, in 1994. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 1975 and earned her dental degree from the University of Maryland in 1979. She chose to switch from pharmacy to dentistry because she wanted a more hands-on career that allowed her to work more closely with patients.

“I like the individual patient-to-patient contact of dentistry,” Dr. Leary says.

“We have an excellent continuing care system. We have a wonderful team dedicated to providing excellent personalized care and service.”

She and her team, which consists of two dental assistants, five hygienists and two business staffers, pride themselves on creating a friendly, low-stress, personal atmosphere to make patients as comfortable as possible.

“We’re a family practice with a personal touch,” says Dr. Leary. “We have an excellent continuing care system. We have a wonderful team dedicated to providing excellent personalized care and service.”

The hygienists who work beside Dr. Leary, and the other staff who keep the office running, are enthusiastic on a daily basis about their professional environment and the work they do.

Financial Coordinator Sue Schott, who has been with Dr. Leary for 10 years, says, “Dentistry comes first, always. Her patients come first, always. She has great customer service skills. Patients love her, they love the practice and sometimes just stop by to say hello. It is more than just a personal relationship.” She adds, “It’s a very friendly, open practice focusing on patient care and satisfaction.”

Dental Hygienist Carole Andrews received her dental training at Ohio State University and has worked with Dr. Leary on and off for more than 18 years, having left the area at one point.

“I brought several other hygienists with me,” she says. “There are three of us that worked together at another practice.” She adds, “Hygienists enjoy working with Dr. Leary because she gives us autonomy. She isn’t looking over our shoulder every minute. She trusts our professionalism and respects our opinions.”

Dr. Leary places a high priority on continuing education for herself, her staff and her patients. Her website features informative dental videos and a list of common dental-related questions and detailed answers patients can access from home anytime. How often should I brush my teeth? Is an electric toothbrush better? Should I buy soft or hard bristles? Dr. Leary’s website addresses these and a multitude of other topics.

Dr. Leary and her staff have built a dental practice dedicated to creating and maintaining healthy, beautiful smiles. Focusing on comprehensive home care, cosmetic and restorative dentistry, Dr. Leary uses state-of-the-art equipment including digital radiography and laser treatment. In-office services include dental exams and cleaning, fluoride treatment, the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, tooth whitening, composite fillings, porcelain crowns, onlays, inlays, bridges, dentures, implants and veneers.
