Public Comprehensive

Salisbury UniversityIt’s no secret that Salisbury University is growing. Nationally recognized for excellence, SU has a creative curriculum emphasizing undergraduate research, study abroad, internships and civic engagement. Offering 54 graduate and undergraduate programs, all four of its schools are endowed, a rarity among public institutions nationwide. Exceptional students, a highly regarded faculty and dynamic administration have earned SU recognition as a Maryland campus on the move.

“These are exciting times at Salisbury University,” said President Janet Dudley-Eshbach. “Our reputation is spreading and we truly have become A Maryland University of National Distinction.”

Dudley-Eshbach is leading the way. She’s ushering in a new era at SU with exciting campus transformations. Most recently, the SU Foundation approved the acquisition of a 19-acre property, known locally as Dresser. With it, SU expands to 182 acres on both sides of Route 13. “It’s our Louisiana Purchase,” Dudley-Eshbach said. In addition, plans are underway for a new 600-bed residence hall and commercial complex. It’s scheduled to open in 2011—the same year as a new home for the Perdue School of Business. Also in the works is a four-level, 850-space parking garage. Brand new this fall is SU’s $65 million, 165,000-square-foot Teacher Education and Technology Center. With $5.3 million in new technology equipment, it features SMART classrooms and an Integrated Media Center with a 24-track audio recording studio, 15 editing suites, a cutting-edge digital exhibition gallery, a digital photography lab and one of the few campus-based high-definition digital video production studios in the nation.

There are many other reasons for the increasing interest in the campus. Not only is it one of Kiplinger’s “100 Best Values in Public Colleges,” but for the 10th consecutive year, SU is among The Princeton Review’s The 368 Best Colleges. For the 12th year, SU is one of U.S. News & World Report’s Top Public Universities—Master’s category (North), the highest-placing public Master’s-level university in Maryland. SU is home to 7,800 students from across the United States and 61 foreign countries. They have the fastest time-to-degree average in the University System of Maryland. Among SU’s 380 full-time faculty are distinguished Fulbright Scholars and USM Regents Award winners. On the national scene, SU is the only comprehensive university to twice host the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), welcoming 2,800 of the country’s top scholars to campus. On the playing field, the Sea Gulls have earned eight national championships in the past six years.

The University is home to two National Public Radio affiliates: WSCL 89.5 FM and WSDL 90.7 FM. Its Relay For Life is consistently one of the nation’s best, raising more than $95,000 last year alone for the American Cancer Society. For visitors, the Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture is a treasure trove of information, while SU’s Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art was named one of the “10 Great Places to See American Folk Art” by USA Today. SU’s learning community also extends beyond campus with its annual Fun Day family festival and “Learn with SU” classes for Delmarva residents age 50 and over. SU alumni include Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, Perdue Farms CEO Jim Perdue, Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel and Broadway actress Jennifer Wills (Phantom of the Opera). With more than 35,000 alumni throughout the United States, SU is making its mark as A Maryland University of National Distinction.
