With the opening of the Queen Anne’s
Emergency Center, Queen Anne’s County
residents no longer need to travel more than 20 miles
one way on congested roadways to seek emergency
medical treatment. Open 24 hours a day, every day of
the year, the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center is a
resource close to home for people of all ages.
The Queen Anne’s Emergency Center began as a partnership between Queen Anne’s County government, the University of Maryland Medical System and Shore Health System. These organizations came together with county and state legislators to add a level of emergency medical services not currently available in this part of the Mid-Shore region.
A full-service licensed emergency center operated by Shore Health System, the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center has 14 beds, four ambulance bays and a helipad. The center’s staff includes board-certified emergency physicians, nurses experienced in emergency care, and hospital-experienced radiology and medical technologists.
The center is equipped to take standard x-rays and CT scans and has a full-service clinical testing laboratory for blood work and to provide emergency blood supplies. Special equipment for eye injuries is available as well as neonatal resuscitation beds for newborns.
The Queen Anne’s Emergency Center is equipped to treat patients with acute illnesses, injuries and trauma. Arrangements are made for seamless transport by ambulance or helicopter to a hospital for patients who are assessed to need advanced diagnostic testing and treatment only available in an inpatient hospital setting.
Since opening on October 4, 2010, the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center staff has been busy, treating an average of 30 patients a day. “We see everything and everybody,” says Jane Wang, M.D., medical director for the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center. “We see everything from minor injuries and illnesses to strokes, heart attacks, breathing emergencies and traumatic injuries.”
For patients who need hospital care, the physicians at the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center work closely with the hospital’s admitting physician. “Because we have already done the initial assessment and testing,” Dr. Wang explains, “and we have discussed the case with the hospital physician, when patients arrive at the hospital, a bed is waiting for them.”
The Shore Health System medical campus in Queen Anne’s County will expand in 2011 with a medical pavilion. The facility will house physician practices, diagnostic testing and rehabilitation services.
In addition to Maryland Primary Care Physicians, physicians in a variety of specialties will bring their practices to the Shore Health System Medical Pavilion. Medical specialties available to Queen Anne’s County residents include urology, general surgery, neurology, endocrinology, otolaryngology, orthopedics, psychiatry, gastroenterology and cardiology.
Shore Health System will have a diagnostic imaging suite in the Medical Pavilion for convenient access to x-rays, mammography and MRI scans. Shore Rehabilitation Services, which provides physical, occupational and speech therapy, will also be available at the new facility.
The Queen Anne’s Emergency Center and the Shore Health System Medical Pavilion are located on Shoreway Drive at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and Nesbit Road, near Grasonville. For more information about the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center visit www.qaemergencycenter.org.
