Shore Health System’s cancer program offers the assurance of advanced technology and the reassurance of personal care.

The Shore Regional Cancer Program includes the Shore Regional Breast Center, the Requard Radiation Oncology Center, outpatient chemotherapy, clinical trials, and financial, nutrition and social services. Each physician, nurse, radiation therapist, social worker and dietitian—along with the other healthcare professionals who comprise the care team—demonstrate a unique regard for each patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual health.

Sophisticated cancer care begins with an expert diagnosis. Advanced diagnostic radiology services help physicians determine the optimal course of treatment. Imaging services include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, angiography, interventional radiology, computed tomography (CT), and the combined power of positron emission topography and CT (PET CT).

Mammography screening is the best tool for detecting breast cancer at an early, treatable stage in women age 40 and older. Shore Health System’s state-of-the-art digital mammography provides the largest, clearest field of view available for precise images of patients with diverse body shapes and sizes. Digital mammography is available at The Memorial Hospital at Easton, Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge, and the diagnostic and imaging centers in Easton, Denton and Centreville. All locations have access to a central electronic image library, which contains an archive of patient mammograms performed at any Shore Health System facility.

Shore Regional Breast Center at Memorial Hospital offers a wide range of breast health services. A nurse “navigator” helps women move seamlessly through diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Expert surgeons provide consultation, surgery and follow-up care. Genetic counseling is also available. A grant from the Maryland affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure funds outreach workers who travel throughout the community to educate women about the prevention and early detection of breast cancer.

For prostate cancer, the da Vinci® robotic system is available to guide the surgeon’s hands, ensuring precision and better outcomes when surgery is required. When radiation therapy is needed, the Requard Radiation Oncology Center has two linear accelerators, which deliver intensity modulated radiation therapy for a higher dose of radiation to the tumor with fewer side effects for the patient. Image guided radiotherapy adds even more precision. A new form of high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, called MammoSite, which is used for breast cancer, reduces the treatment time by delivering radiation directly to the site of the tumor through a catheter inserted during surgery.

When chemotherapy is indicated, patients are treated by a specialized care team with the most current drug therapies and education. Social workers, dietitians, financial counselors, complementary medicine services, palliative care, lymphedema services, exercise therapy and a host of support groups provide encouragement and assistance for patients and families coping with cancer. Shore Regional Cancer Center also provides patients with access to the latest in cancer treatment through a variety of clinical trials.
